What are my rights and duties toward neighbors in Islam?

The Prophet ﷺ said Jibril kept advising him about the neighbor until he thought the neighbor might be given a share of inheritance. That is how seriously Islam takes the people who live beside you — Muslim or not. Do not harm them with noise, waste, or a sharp tongue, and do not ignore them in hardship.

A practical duty is simple: greet, share when you can, lower the volume, and assume good. If a neighbor wrongs you, respond with as much dignity as you can manage, and seek help if the harm is real. Rights flow both ways; your peace and theirs are tied together.
