Is posting photos of yourself or family on social media permissible in Islam?

There is no single settled ruling — posting photos on social media falls under the broader, genuinely disputed issue of photography and images in Islam (see Q4), and scholars who permit photography generally extend that to social media as long as the content itself (dress, mixing, captions) stays within Islamic guidelines. The stricter concern isn't the photo-sharing technology itself but what accompanies it: immodest images, exposing women's photos to a wide unrelated male audience, or content that invites fitnah (temptation/harm) is discouraged or prohibited regardless of which view on photography one follows.

Many contemporary scholars advise practical caution rather than an outright ban: keep profiles reasonably private, avoid posting photos of wives and daughters publicly (a concern raised particularly by South Asian and Gulf scholars around family honor and safety), and be mindful that anything posted publicly is effectively permanent and searchable. Some scholars who hold that photography is impermissible in principle still note that necessity (ID documents, professional needs, family memory-keeping within reasonable limits) creates broad exceptions in practice.

Source: general application of the photography debate (see Q4 sources — SeekersGuidance, IslamQA, Dar al-Ifta) to social media platforms; no single authoritative ruling specific to "social media" as a category.
